The East of England public sector is underfunded and, as a consequence, the third sector in the East of
England is underfunded in comparison with other English regions. Central government funds, national
lottery funds and trust funds all direct money away from the region to areas perceived nationally to be of
greater need.

The primary purpose of this document is to highlight the main development issues facing the third sector
in the East of England over the next decade in terms of creating a thriving sector.

Climate change is a reality that affects us all and its implications are profoundly important for the Yorkshire and Humber region. These implications will become more severe over time and we all need to start to adapt our vulnerable systems, assets, services and management approaches to this challenge now, both individually and collectively.

This study has unique qualities that can be applied to the Yorkshire and Humber region to help organisations understand and adapt to the implications faced by climate change.

In February 2009 the Institute for Volunteering Research (IVR) was commissioned by Natural England to research environmental volunteering in the South West of England. It followed a pilot research project that was successfully completed by IVR in the North East of England in 2008. The aim of the research was to explore the nature and impact of volunteering within environmental organisations in the South West of England.
